2008 Collaboration Game

Well, the last one went pretty darn well and it's been quite a while.
Let's go!

[WAIT. WHAT IS THIS?]

For those unfamiliar with the Collaboration Contest, I would refer them to link to the previous thread,
but I seem to have deleted all of the rules from that Sad

But basically, it consisted of a marathon-type of contest in which one chapter of the game is sent to an entrant for him to use to base his chapter off of.
There was a chain of games and in the end, the series was composed of 7 individual chapters.

The old dinosaur can be found here! http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=27

This time, the rules will be tweaked a little bit, as explained BELOW!

[RULES!]

[Time: ~One Month]

I really want each entrant to have more of an opportunity to showcase his/her game-making styles, so I will not allow the same chapter-sharing that permitted last time >:[

Instead, once entrants have signed up, a chain of the game's storyline will be quickly formed and that will be passed out.

With these bits of storyline, everybody will have roughly a month to finish their chapters.

This way, if all goes well, all of the chapters will be released at the same time.

To give you a general idea of how things go down:

Week One: Setting up the story
      * I will have collected a list of entrants (hopefully) and will randomly sort them into an order.
      * I will send a text file to the first person in line consisting of new characters (Physical as well as personality descriptions), settings,
and the current progress of the STORYLINE.
      * The first person in line will quickly write up a story, adding new characters if he wants, and send his/her text file to the next person
      in line.
      * The first person in line will also give the second person a summary of the summary that I gave to the first person.
S/HE WILL NOT COPY AND PASTE the original text file.
      * Process continues until everybody has thought up a bit of storyline for their own games.

Rest of Month: Making the chapter
    *Details to Come

[Resources: Everything you've got]

I'll let you use graphics and anything else you've made in the past to incorporate into your chapter this time around. However, you've got a whole MONTH, so try to make some new stuff too!

[AND SO!]

This is all I could think of at the moment, but more things will be added.

But first things first, who will be able to sign up to dedicate themselves to working on a chapter this month?

Currently Signed Up:
*Surlaw
*Blue Train
*RedMaverickZero
*Lonely Rolling Star
*Rurouni Catholic
*Calehay

I really want to participate once we know exactly what the time frame will be. I'm going to be extremely busy for the next month to month and a half.

Well, I was planning for this contest to start as soon as possible and end near the middle of July.
Hope that won't be too much of a problem.

Fortunately, like the previous contest, I may be adding extensions to the deadline.

i really really really wanna do this. the last one was so fun to make and play, how everyone had there own style in it. i have nothing but free time all summer (and probably fall and winter if it takes that long again, haha.) and my graphics and concepts are better then they were last year. the remaining time until the colab starts ill use to learn advance plotscript and practice pixels until im able to make the best game to my ability for you. (and ill be sure to use spell check on hard words ; ).)

but this time i think we should all work in the same gamefile if possable so items and levels actually matter.

It's great to see that you're excited about this!

I'd rather not let any of the entrants see what the previous users have done.
It's all the more awesome when each chapter features completely random content (In my opinion).

A single game file might also make things tough for a chapter like the previous chapter 5, in which Moogle1 made a screen-scroller.

It could be troublesome for some users to follow that up with normal game-play.

Previous chapters could also be very easily broken by another entrant's meddling, so I think it'll be safer to use separate chapter files. Smile

Now Kamon, Kamon, Come on! More people, more fun!

I really liked the last theme we did with this.

But, the only way I'd want to enter is if the theme was something really different that none of us had ever really done before.

And providing it's an awesome theme, I'd volunteer myself to go first if no one else has already.

Yes, something new and different and unusual would be nice. As long as this contest runs in the summer and ends before the end of August, count me in. I'd like to participate like last time (and I'll actually get it done on time too).

I'm afraid I can't start off the storyline with Robot-zombie pirates taking over the first port of Cheeseland and requiring Baron Von Frunchy to ride the legendary Legendary Vespa of Noor in order to run over every single Robot-zombie pirate, as this could potentially be very confusing to the receiving entrant.

Rather, I'm afraid that I'm going to start off the line with a slightly familiar setting and let the storyline accelerate from there as every user adds a bit of his own zing into it.

Remember that you'll have the power to change anything in your chapter.
If the hero used to be a bunny, hey, go ahead and turn him into a walrus if you really want to.
Take a look at Surlaw's chapter from last time, it created a totally different spin on the game.
Now imagine if every chapter did that instead of going along with the previous!

Orders are going to be assigned randomly. Or systematically.
Whichever I find is best.

Don't worry, that's the aim of the game.

Again, we'll start once I get a full roster of entrants.
The sign-up deadline will be in two days.

I will assign orders to everybody.

I will send the summary of 'chapter 1' to #1 in line.

#1 will read the chapter and write the summary of 'chapter 2' while reciting 'chapter 1'. This recitation can be more or less detailed than the original copy of 'chapter 1', but it can not have been copy-and-pasted.

#1 will send the modified 'chapter 1' and the new 'chapter 2' back to me.

I will send this text file to #2, and he'll have to write his 'chapter 3' and chapters '1 and 2' in his own words.

You'll be given a guideline on how to submit chapter summaries.

This should keep the storyline somewhat consistent, but I hope that the forgetting of details from previous chapters also helps entrants fill in the gaps with all sorts of awesome stuff.

Once your chapter has been written, you have my permission to begin.
I will aim for this contest to last a month.
As said before, extensions may or may not be given.

That pretty much means you've given us complete control to make this the wackiest collaboration game yet.

I like it! Even if the theme sucks, I can make it awesome.

Yup, you have just about total control over your own chapter.

Code:
From somewhere, a transmission...

Twin: Where is everybody...
Twin: There aren't enough entrants and I may soon be reduced to awkwardly inviting people through private messages.
Twin: ...Ha-ha. That was a joke.
Twin: Ha-ha.
Twin: ...If I have to, though, I really will...

I'll probably kick-start the contest really soon by ordering the current entrants and sending out the story stubs.
Maybe even as early as tonight!

Shoot, I'll enter. Even if I have to end up making something that's five minutes long.

Excellent.

The Story-writing has started.

You still have until tomorrow to sign up.
I'm not sure how I want to do the finale, so people are still welcome to enter anytime during this week.

You are not to share anything with anybody but me.
Your written chapter and chapter summaries will be submitted back to me either through a Private-Message or through E-mail.

More directions will be PM-ed to whoever is up.

Good luck and have fun everybody! Smile
