"Finish Your Dang Game" Download Links and Voting

Post by Bob the Hamster »

EDIT: the contest is over! see <a href="http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewtop ... 0516">this thread</a> for the winners

The <a href="http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewtop ... 8">"Finish Your Dang Game" Contest</a> is drawing to a close!

I will be updating a list of submissions here for easy downloading. It is highly recommended that anybody who is competing for the "Most Improved" prize should also provide a link to an old copy of their game for comparison. If you don't, some judges may assume that you are not competing in that category.

Post all comments about game completeness here, but <b>send your votes for "Best" and "Most Improved" directly to me via Private Message, or via e-mail to Bob@HamsterRepublic.com</b>

For review, here are the voting rules, copied-and-pasted from the <a href="http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewtop ... 2778">full rules</a>.

<b>=VOTING=</b>

After the contest ends there will be a <s>1 month</s> judging period ending on <s>September 30th</s>. Voting has been extended to <s>Sunday October 18th</s> Tuesday Oct 20th. (really!)

Voting will be done in three parts. First, each voter will vote for each game by secret ballot (e-mail or PM to me, James) in the following two categories:

(1) Overall quality from zero stars (low) to 5 stars (high)

(2) Level of improvement from contest start to contest end. from zero stars to 5 stars.

Finally, each voter will publicly vote at the completeness of each game in a public thread.

(3) Complete? Yes/No. Completeness is defined as being a whole game that can be reasonably called finished. Complete does not have to mean perfect. It does not have to mean zero bugs. It just means "not incomplete anymore"

<b>=LATE SUBMISSIONS=</b>

Late submissions are okay (The penalty for late submissions after the Sept 1st deadline is 4% per day)

So that makes Sept 25th the last day for late submissions.

And I am sorry I didn't clarify this sooner, but the late penalty of 4% per day is deducted from your score for "Best" and "Most Improved" categories, but deducted from your $5 prize for the "Completeness" category.

<b>=CONTESTANT DOWNLOAD LINKS=</b>

I will do my best to keep this list up-to-date as the entries roll in. If I missed anyones game, please let me know!

Ahem.

http://www.slimesalad.com/forum/viewtop ... 7367#57367

For the first time in all the time I've been making games, I set a deadline, and thought up how far I'd like to get, and made it happen. Some things lack general polishing (especially around the end) but I'm overall VERY happy with the progress I made. Thanks james for the inspiration for me to get to where i am.
Blip.

I wish I'd read the part about leaving the old version before updating. I don't have the old one to compare anymore, just the uppdated! one!

I expect to lose, but I'm going down fighting.

(snip)

So that makes Sept 25th the last day for late submissions.
We either need an earlier hard deadline or a much later voting deadline.

Incidentally, how many games are still likely to enter?

Also, "completeness" is supposed to be voted on in a public thread; is that this one?

Yeah. I didn't think out the 4% per day late thing very well, but we will stick with it anyway. If the voting period needs extending, we shall extend it.

This is the place.

Will we gain any incentives for voting on this contest, besides giving 5s for our own game? Maybe a minor slimebucks prize will encourage people who don't have an entry to vote. Since this would count under reviewing lots of games at once (though not too thoroughly), maybe an Int increase would fit the flavor.

Nobody has voted yet, but I am assuming that people are taking their time to play the games and waiting for any late ones.

I'll think about it.

Here's the thing about voting: you need to play each game twice to give it a fair shake. First the old version, then the new version. It's twice as much work to vote as it would be in a normal contest. I don't really have a good solution for this, but maybe someone else does.

What happens if nobody plays a certain game and/or doesn't vote on it?

I feel like considering the length of both Bloodlusts, I probably won't get any votes, despite how much I've worked on it.

I intend to vote on everything myself. I think other people intend to vote on everything too.

How long would you estimate the average play-time for Bloodlust is?

I want to play the new version all the way through, but I will probably skip through the old version using debug keys, just so I can get a feel of the differences.

As for Wandering Hamster, when I post it (soon?) I will also include a SAV file right before the new stuff starts, since I know most people have played the whole beginning already... of course that method works for me, but wouldn't necessarily work for other games.

For me the really hard part is going to be getting enough time on a Windows computer to play through the Non-OHR games. All my home computers are Linux, so I will have to play Tower of Heaven and Modern Magic at work or something.

So let's hypothetically assume some people want to play all the games in this contest, but aren't long-time OHRRPGCE developers. Could you explain to these hypothetical people how to play an .rpg file? And any compatibility issues with Windows Vista? I mean, someone might have them... :(

BTW... am I only one trying Blue Train's game Dawn but having it completely broken and non-functioning? Nothing seems interactable much, and when the rolling enemies run into me, I'm stuck until I push okay, fight, then get stuck until I push okay again, then fight again, until I ctrl+alt+delete out of the game. I assumed I'm doing something wrong, because the game's page is claiming to have content I can't get.

I still think it's a huge undertaking to play all the games in the contest for voting purposes, especially given that you have to play all the old versions to vote on "Most Improved." :(

I assumed we were given an entire month to vote for a reason. Are you saying all the votes will be averaged instead of totaled? I think it'd be mighty unfair for less popular games to get more polarizing scores. And there's only 8 so far. I've already done 3, only 3 more have old versions. I'll get right on them as soon as I learn how.
