Newbie Game Remake Contest

Post by Mogri »

Oh man, guys, I just got the best idea. It's the Newbie Game Remake Contest, and it's exactly what it sounds like.

Rules:
Pick one of your own "newbie games." This is up to your own discretion, but a good rule of thumb is the more embarrassed the game makes you, the better. My pick, for example, would be Mystic Sky, a kind of archetypal newbie game in that it stars me and my friends in a ridiculous and poorly-explained plot.

Remake the game so that it doesn't suck. To the extent possible, keep it true to the original. In other words, don't make an entirely new game that happens to have the same title and don't make the game a parody of the old version.

The rest is up to you -- you can expand the game if you want, or you can restrict it to just part of the old game.

The deadline is two weeks from the release of the third entry. Upload your game to Slime Salad, with the original included in a separate file.

Prizes:
The winner will receive 500 Slimebucks and a unique ability (hopefully I have an initial version of the Slime Salad battle engine done by then). All participants will get a unique piece of equipment. Special surprise prizes!

It's about time! :)

I guess Exposing the Unknown could use a pick-me-up or something.

The prizes are also most intriguing! :o

It's a good idea. I already remade my newbie game (Duck and MJ), but I lost the file ages ago.

No... what about the game is slimy? You'd need to remake the game as is.

Unless your newbie game was made with a specific person and you want to team up with that said person, I don't think that would make any sense..

Wouldn't Catman technically be your first game, though?

I thought the point of the contest wasn't just to remake your very first game, but to give some projects that didn't turn out right a second chance. :(

Well, my first game was Slayers, then I remade it as Endless Saga, which was my second game and got praise....

Does that mean my entry is already done? :D

My little brother was once working on a remake of my newbie game. Wonder if I couldn't pick up some of the pieces there?

though technically a lot of the ideas that ORBituaries was based on and around were all either scrapped or retooled into some aspect of Where Gods And Mortals Dance

Hmm... HMM...

Now, if anyone remembers "Wow, This is Awesome!", you know full well that taking stupid stuff and making it cool is one of my specialties.

...Dang, how does this program work again?

Yeah, I remember that. That was great.

Guys, I just played through Mystic Sky for what I'm pretty sure was the first time. The battle difficulty ranges from moderate to extreme, with both of the game's bosses reaching toward impossible due to their unlimited healing ability. On top of that, the plot is even worse than I remembered. The game starts with the main character on an island for no reason, when he suddenly for no reason decides that he needs to leave. He takes his friend with him without explaining and they leave town on the barest of pretenses.

This is going to be a great contest.
