Hi guys, I've decided I'd like to start doing some minecraft journalism, so I'm hoping to make a bunch of videos of our server and post them on youtube. I've started with this: http://youtu.be/5Yp-Tz6yXXQ. It's not great, I know, but I hope I'll be able to show off parts of the server as I go. I'll do a tour of Lab's fort next I think!

I just bought Minecraft and James let me on the server, hooray! Of course, the absolute first thing I did when logging on was go into the netherworld or whatever it's called. I saw the rail to "The Gray" and, not having a cart, I just decided to walk. That was scary! I think it was safe, but damn.

I got to The Gray, and I gotta say, I'm super impressed with what you guys have done.

That little house caught my eye, so I went on down and was greeted by...
Image
...a cat? I didn't know there were cats...cool.

I went a little crazy collecting eggs then throwing them around, so there are like 15 new chickens in the little farm area. Looking back at The Gray at night was very pretty.

Then I got eaten by a spider. I think it's time I re-learned how to play Minecraft...

PS I just changed my skin to the raincoat killer from Deadly Premonition (also my avatar) so, uh, maybe I'll scare off spiders now.

@SwampTroll
Oh no, the comments have been disabled! However are we going to give you any feedback?

I guess this forum thread will do!
I'm glad to see you implemented a little bit of editing, but I feel like more is necessary. To demonstrate how each chest is filled with cobble, for instance, you could record yourself opening every last chest and then speed up that footage by, like, 16 times or something. Maybe your editing software won't go that fast. What are you using?

Here's a little tip for your future videos, a simple way to create some nice-looking rotating shots of a particular place or building. [s]Hide your HUD with F1 and[/s] (nevermind, I just noticed you've got that covered) Enable smooth mousing with F8. An extra thing you can do that may or may not make the camera even smoother is to do everything on-camera very slowly, then speed up the footage. (I did all of this back in my Sugar Mush video, and I especially like the last shot at 1:58)

I dig that swanky music you picked; that swagger at 1:28 should be the new "troll stroll." I'm a bit surprised there wasn't more commentary or annotations. Are you going to be talking over these videos later, or is it mostly just going to be videos, musicks, and annotations?

This makes me want to make some more minecraft videos! I should hurry up and finish the forest temple near the library! (The temple itself is pretty much done, but the "mega tree" I had planned hasn't grown at all)

@TheCube
Hey♥
Always happy to see a new face around. A shame you didn't make it to my adorable igloo in The Gray, but maybe next time! I look forward to seeing you in-game sometime soon!

@Meow: I already got carrots on the island and the command block thing would be nice so I don't have to make an epic Nether trip each time I want to go to my continent.

James, I propose you make a teleport room, situated somewhere obscure. Inside would be command blocks leading to various landmarks, with command block teleporters at their respective locations leading to the teleport room. It would make travel a whole lot easier, and we would stop completely relying on the Nether for travelling around our world.

Sorry I have been dragging my feet on the teleporter. I have been wrapped up in other stuff (both minecraft and other) and haven't had time to build the Creeperton Teleporter Station yet. (I decided that creeperton, rather than the spawn swamp will be the better place for it)

Let me know what coordinates you want me to use for the Teleporter on Master K Continent.

I want to keep the teleporters to a minimum, so at least to start with, Creeperton, The Gray, and Master K's Continent will be the only telporters.

@Bob: Seems fair. I'd love to come up with an elaborate teleporter on my island, which uses Redstone Lamps and the command block. Perhaps make it look like it's loading, then it teleports you? That would look pretty cool. I'll get to work on that and post exact coordinates tommorow. Right now, it's 2:00 AM and I need sleep.

EDIT: Teleport the players to -234 65 -19446.

Thanks for the teleporters, James. I was able to see a mushroom island for the first time, yay!

Image spam time.

I've decided to make a big map of the spawn swamp and surrounding areas. I'm going to leave copies of the map in notable locations to act as markers on every copy of the map. After I've completed it, I'll make a bunch of copies of it and leave some in the spawn swamp, possibly with a guide to what each marker is.

I was sad to leave my chickens behind, but I'm sure they'll be safe.
Image

I set off with some diamond pants and iron armor on, 64 roast chickens, 9 extra maps, and a bunch of other crap. I may have overdone it, but we'll see. I'm walking to the NW most section of the map. Along the way I found God's giant compass and Mt. James. Mt. James is absolutely stunning, by the way. I can't imagine how much time it took.

Image

In the North-western most corner of my map, I found what appears to be an office building. It is quite vacant except for a handy bed in the basement. From the roof, I got a great shot of Mt. James and the volcano-rings base to the west of it.

Image

Here's the map so far:

So far, that's all she wrote. I'm keeping a journal of my travels, but I dunno what I'll do with it when I'm done. IT's not like you can copy books to give away :(

A PROPOSAL

that we as a community organise semi-regular 'jams' on the server, where a whole bunch of us coordinate our schedules so we can all play online together. I'm probably one of only a couple who are dramatically ahead/behind everyone else, so this should be doable.

So, I propose that at some point in earlymid-January that we attempt to play online together for between one and two hours to create a community build on a relatively under-developed part of the server. We should try and come up with a suitable build idea before the session.

James: Maybe you could build a temporary warp station to take us to whatever build spot we settle on?

I hope you guys are interested in doing something like this - I think it would be great fun.

If people register interest, then we can begin to set a date and time(s).

Offhand: TMC lives in New Zealand, BMR lives in the Philippines, VampiDucki lives in Japan. I think there are several more I'm forgetting.

Don't let that stop you, though.

Weekends work best for me. As long as I know the time in advance, it won't be hard for me to attend on a weekend.

If we do it on a weekday, the best time for me is 6:00pm to 8:00pm california time. That is 2:00 to 4:00 in the morning UTC time.

I like the idea of a teleporter to our new remote location. We can connect it to other stuff via rail or nether rail later at our leisure (I enjoy that sort of thing.)

As for ideas as to what to group-build, lets propose a few things!

I think I would enjoy a modest sized but extremely dense walled city. Something with narrow streets and multi-story houses. I think the construction of such houses would lend themselves well to group work because most of it doesn't need to be precisely measured. All the houses should have similar materials and similar styles, but no two have to look exactly the same. Perhaps we could have one larger central castle or churchtower that looms over the rest of the town.

Another possibility would be a goblin kingdom. We could start in the first cave system we find, and hollow it out as big as we can manage, and line the floor of it with ramshackle cobblestone huts and and giant mushrooms.

I fully support both of those. Perhaps only the walled city slightly more because of the larger castle/church tower. However, if we have a central larger structure underground in the Goblin Kingdom then I'm sold!

am i late to the party

I'd love to hop in on this as soon as I can, but I just moved to a new state and signed up with a new school, so I can't predict what times I'll be available until mid-January.
