Beardthar checks to see if there is sufficient slack in the rope, and the proceeds to move the rope to the bookshelves. It is a sad state of affairs when a bookshelf is sturdier than a stone wall, and Beardthar shakes his head nostalgically thinking about how his father would have ranted and raved about masonry left in such disrepair.

While he works, Beardthar's eyes casually scan the titles of the books on the shelf

The rope is tied to the bookshelf now, and provides a solid anchor for the others. It takes some effort and some time, but soon everyone is safely up in the room.

Holy Saint Abkar al-Akbar picks his nose (somewhat less discreetly than he imagines).

Beardthar
You go to the desk and examine it. It appears to be made of oak, and is surprisingly well made and clean, considering the surroundings. There are two drawers. You open them and look inside.

The first drawer contains a few sheets of blank paper, a bottle of ink, and a few quills. Besides that, there's nothing else in the drawer. The second drawer though, is more interesting. Inside is a small wooden jewelry box. It's currently closed, but you don't see a locking mechanism of any sort on it. Beside the box is a short wooden rod, possibly ebony. It's about a foot long and an inch in diameter. It's perfectly smooth, with no markings of any sort on it.

Everyone else
You view the room more closely.

The room is filthy. Beardthar is in one corner, examining the desk. Near the desk is a medium sized chest, perhaps 2'x1'x1'. It looks fairly well made, not quite ornate, but better than what the average commoner could afford.

The bookshelves are lined with books. A quick look reveals that they are mostly books about history and genealogy. There are also books on old religions and deities.

Knowledge (Dungeoneering) (1d20 + Ranks + INT)
  • Akbar: 14 + 0 + -1 = 13 Success
    Beardthar: 12 + 0 + 1 = 13 Success
    Peanut: 13 + 2 + 2 = 17 Success
    Spittle: 7 + 0 + 1 = 8 Fail
    Tim-Tim: 3 + 0 + 1 = 4 Fail
You take a look at the greasy black spot on the floor. It's roughly the shape of a man, but more interesting than that, is that it seems very recent, within the past hour, perhaps within the past few minutes even.

Listen (1d20 + Ranks + WIS)
  • Akbar: 9 + 0 + 1 + 1 = 11 Fail
    Beardthar: 15 + 0 + 3 = 18 Success
    Peanut: 13 + 4 + 1 + 2 = 20 Success
    Spittle: 7 + 0 + 0 = 7 Fail
    Tim-Tim: 14 + 0 + 3 + 2 = 19 Success
There seems to be something approaching outside the door.

Spot (1d20 + Ranks + WIS)
  • Akbar: 9 + 0 + 1 + 1 = 11 Fail
    Beardthar: 15 + 5 + 3 = 23 Success
    Peanut: 13 + 5 + 1 = 19 Success
    Spittle: 7 + 0 + 0 = 7 Fail
    Tim-Tim: 14 + 0 + 3 = 17 Success
You notice, at the window, that the bricks have come slightly undone with your ascent. As if that wasn't terrifying enough, you spot within the crumbling mortar, something white. On closer inspection, you find that it is bone, perhaps human, as if a corpse had been cemented in place within the wall.

Beardthar decides that the ebony rod is pretty, and pockets it. Then he looks inside the jewelry box.

Beardthar
The box hinges open, and inside you find two silver rings. Each ring is set with a small diamond. They are extremely well made and you guess that they would easily be worth a few thousand gold apiece.

Tim-Tim, worried about the thing that seems to be approaching the other side of the door to this room, decides he rather surprise them then have them surprise him. So he goes and opens the door, planning to color spray anything or anyone on the other side.

Tim-Tim
You open the door and take a look outside. It's fairly dark, but the light from the broken window in the room provides some illumination. The door opens out to a hallway moving right and left perpendicular to the room. You look down the hall to the right and see nothing. To the left though, you see some humanoid shapes shambling forward.
Zombies.
Perhaps six or maybe eight of them. They don't look to be moving towards the room, rather they seem to be simply walking down the hall. But you're not sure.

Everyone
Spot (1d20 + Ranks + WIS)

    Spittle: 12 + 0 + 0 = 12 Fail
    Tim-Tim: 17 + 0 + 3 = 20 Success
You notice something on the floor, it's rather difficult to see amid the grime, but upon closer inspection you see that it is a blackened ring.

"Hey... I'm not sure I like the look of this place." Holy Saint Akbar al-Akbar concentrates really hard. He gets a headache in the process but also detects evil in the surrounding area.

Beardthar decides not to pick up the valuable-looking rings in the box. In fact, he closes the box for now. They might be worth inspection later, but now is not the time.

He closes the desk, and tries to look nonchalant, as if he had just stopped in this room for a breather before going back to work mopping the floors (A ruse that is unlikely to work without a mop)

Holy Saint Akbar-al Akbar

You sense many faint auras of evil through the wall, 8 directly outside in the hallway. Farther of, there are more auras of faint evil, but when you look upwards, you sense a rather strong aura of evil a couple of floors up. A quick look around the room is interesting, the blackened smudge on the ground registers a lingering moderate evil aura. A look towards Beardthar registers two faint evil auras near him. Generally, everywhere you look there seems to be some lingering evil.
