Issue 48 is online. I guess my threat of ending the magazine soon helped, because we've got a ton of content, largely from new users! These guys are great. Thanks to everyone for helping this issue come together, and enjoy the Game of the Year 2010 results. Be sure to click the new LIKE button if you're a Facebook user.

Great issue. The retrospective was amazing.
(edit) I am taking suggestions on future topics for SBG. Please give some!

Great issue! The reviews were all good, as was the retrospective. The GOTY article was simple and well done; I like this format for contest results. The Battle Gimmick article was good, although it was recycled from earlier forum posts. There were some possible pitfalls in the techniques that were glossed over, but maybe that's better for such an article.
I didn't view the art sections (I rarely do), but the rest of the issue was great. We do need some more ideas for features though. Hmm...

Pffffthahaha, this thumbnail is the reason I looked at that article
It was a fairly good read. Modern wOHRfare at its, pffft, finest.
So hey! Who's up for another round of fanart from me? I'm still a bit surprised I only got half a dozen last month. Send 'em in, keep me busy (and away from the ever-addictive Team Fortress) while I'm recovering.
Also I feel somewhat responsible for the "Most Anticipated 2011" category being unranked since I filled all my answers with random symbols.

MISTAKE IN MY REVIEW OF VIRIDIA CH 2:
I'm sorry guys, but I misread Baconlabs' readme, and it turns out that the music was NOT ripped, but was nearly entirely original. So I'll just say here that it was fine. The melodies and songs themselves are kind of forgettable, but they do their duty as background to the situation in-game quite well.

If anyone is curious, I've significantly updated Castle on the Night Land since the version that was reviewed in this issue. Some bugs have been fixed. There is now a scoring system that makes collecting the hidden treasures (somewhat) more meaningful. Plus there is an all original music track now.
My intent in all my retro-reviews is review games that are interesting and unique, even if not the best games. There's something that appeals to me about these games that were made with a lot of love, even if lacking skill or experience.
Retro-reviews of "good" games will be rare since the well received older OHR games don't seem to take many chances. That and most older OHR games are just crappy.
Ideally, reading these retro-reviews will entertaining/nostalgic, but the could also give you ideas to put into your own games, but executed with finesse this time.
The tag line courtesy of Surlaw was also great: "Super Exciting Fight! War game video game! A True G's history unearthed."Baconlabs wrote:

i planned on writing another review for slimesalad after this issue came out for the new update to include the new features. i would've done it sooner to add to the issue, but... meh. also, i figured i wouldn't have time, but apparently i was weeks off. darn my almost non-existent concept of time passage!Willy Elektrix wrote:If anyone is curious, I've significantly updated Castle on the Night Land since the version that was reviewed in this issue. i loved the art gallery. hati and the moon made me chuckle.
hey, what's left to review? we should make a list on here so we can keep track of who's claiming to review what.
Hey, I just met you, and this is crazy... So here's some lunchmeat... Sandwich, maybe?

Pretty good issue overall. Another review/retrospective of one of those old games I've seen on the CP gamelist before but never played, lots of stuff to read ("Stupid Battle Gimmicks" is a really great idea for one of those articles that continues through multiple issues), and lots of art-related stuff too.
Glad people seem to like my videogame character sprites. Speaking of those, if I wasn't so lazy there would've been at least a couple more of them--would anyone be interested in seeing a second set of them for the next issue?
If I do make more I'll probably start with the rest of the characters that were going to be in the game before I lost interest in it (Samus, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Mr. Game & Watch)... but other than that, I'd be open to suggestions for more characters. Of course, it'll probably have to be limited to characters I'm at least somewhat familiar with, but that's still a lot of possibilities.

I'd be very much interested in that, partly because I just plain like videogame related stuff (to the point that I actually like Captain N, even twenty years later).FnrrfYgmSchnish wrote: Glad people seem to like my videogame character sprites. There's a HamsterSpeak subforum with a discussion thread for each released issue and another for ideas for each upcoming issue. The games that need reviews are listed there.mjohnson092088 wrote:i must be stupid and/or blind, because i can't find this list. i can't even find where it was posted here on slimesalad!
also, i kinda get distracted by the discussions...
