I think the 20,000 starting figure is based on a level 7 character's earnings over their entire career and the gear is what they spent with it over time, so you can just say that you've had that gear all along for whatever reason you want to think of.

I do indeed have a fire robe. and I might already be wearing it since there's no reason not to (I have mage armor for physical defense).
