I've made a very simplistic game that consists of being assigned a fetch quest by an NPC, and one enemy to fight (who possesses the quest item). Thanks, that was a great answer. I had started with a totally balanced battle, realizing that it was a coin toss, and had started messing with the stats to make it more interesting but just made it less predictable. Thinking about it this way, I should be able to figure out how to balance my battles...

Yes, that's what I'm seeing too, but I don't know what else to tie the tag to. I want the alternate text triggered by the hero returning to the king with the item, as that is the quest. This seems like pretty basic stuff, it must be possible, but I'm a n00b and the HOWTO doesn't really cover much.
