Yes, as long as you are using the same version on both computers, you will be totally safe. It doesn't matter that they are different operating systems.

The tray icon has never been reliable, but I have never needed it (I had forgotten about the problem until you mentioned it)

I suggest just setting up the command line tools. Your ~/Dropbox folder will be synced reliably, even if you don't see the tray icon.
