FF6 has Shadow available for hire at several points in the game. Sometimes he's free, sometimes he'll charge a nominal fee. You're not forced to use him until the Vector mission. SaGa Frontier has plenty of throwaway recruitable characters. Pokemon has at least two instances of a purchasable (Magika...

I don't remember that. I guess it's been awhile. Wasn't it a quicksave, though?

Yay: The maps are now fully 3D, allowing you to move the camera around No more camera issues! One of the goals for the team, said Minagawa, was to recreate the look of the original, while adding in the beautifications players make in their minds due to nostalgia. They're purposely keeping the Super...

I'm in. I don't care which side.

What level are we playing? It might be interesting to have uneven levels, particularly if we end up with a different number of players (e.g. 4 level X heroes, 3 level Y villains).

Why force the player to decide between short-term interest versus long-term team-building stability? This is one reason why I like the idea of building relationships with the mercs and eventually being able to recruit them permanently. (Think "dating sim," minus the dating.) If you really...

Remember though, you have to work to get to the chests, and the equipment might end up being similar to the ones you buy in the store. I can sell the equipment I don't need, though. The mercenary, not so much. For introducing the mercenary hiring mechanic to the player, the best time would be early...

My point is that if you can go through the entire game without ever touching the mercenaries, a good number of players will do so. I don't see mercenaries as an alternative to equipment. If my wizard needs that new robe, he needs it before he goes into the dungeon where he'll get killed without it; ...

I haven't given this a ton of thought, but it seems like if you want hiring to be an attractive option at all, you'll need to make it pretty central to gameplay as a whole. I'm not going to spend my hard-earned GP to gimp my party in the long run unless there's a significant bonus. I'm not sure I'd ...

That looks really great! I love the round look of the walls.

It could be the context, but the walkabout looks odd in the screenshot. (Then again, it could be that his foot and his face are about the same size.)

You can nominate Tim-Tim, but Surlaw has requested that Village People stay off the ballot, pending a more complete release.
